Amygdala hijack refers to a rapid and intense emotional response triggered by the amygdala that overrides rational thinking processes in the prefrontal cortex. This article examines amygdala hijack from both neuropsychological and Islamic psychology perspectives through a narrative literature review. Neuropsychologically, the phenomenon is understood as a dynamic dominance of bottom-up affective reactivity that temporarily weakens top-down executive control, rather than a complete disconnection between emotion and cognition. Vulnerability factors include chronic stress, sleep deprivation, inadequate emotional regulation skills, trauma, and immature prefrontal development in adolescents. From an Islamic psychology-neuroscience synthesis perspective, several studies map the management of feelings (qalb) to the limbic system and evaluative-analytical processes (fikr/muhasabah/ijtihad) to the prefrontal region, allowing amygdala hijack to be interpreted as a temporary imbalance between emotional regulation and analytical-decisional control. Practical strategies aligned with both frameworks include emotion labeling, cognitive reappraisal/muhasabah, spiritual mindfulness breathing exercises, and Islamic contemplative practices (dhikr, salat, fasting) that are associated in certain literature with calmness, emotional control, and emotional regulation process changes. However, the strength of evidence and mechanistic claims for these practices vary considerably and require further rigorous research. This article concludes that amygdala hijack is not only a neurobiological phenomenon but also an issue of moral character (akhlak) and self-regulation competence that constitutes a target of psychological-spiritual education and training in the Islamic framework.
